Η εκδήλωση περιλαμβάνει περφόρμανς, ομιλίες, κείμενα, βίντεο και μουσική των Dina Mimi, Karim Kattan, Makimakkuk, Mary Jirmanus Saba, Mohammad Shawky Hassan, Natasha Soobramanien, Nile Sunset Annex, Noor Abed, Noor Alsamarrai και πραγματοποιείται με την υποστήριξη του Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts και σε συνεργασία με την Allianz Kulturstiftung. Ορισμένα από τα έργα ήταν αναθέσεις για το Φεστιβάλ Read the Room που παρουσιάστηκε στο Kaaitheater τον Μάρτιο του 2022 στις Βρυξέλλες.

‘A Labor Theory of Artistic Value: On Motherhood and Artistic Genius’ 

Οπτικοακουστική ομιλία στα αγγλικά, 35 λεπτά

Εξερευνώντας τις διασταυρώσεις μεταξύ της έμφυλης αναπαραγωγικής εργασίας που κρατά τον πολιτιστικό χώρο σε κινητικότητα και της αναπαραγωγικής εργασίας της μητρότητας, αυτή η συνεργατική περφόρμανς συνδυάζει προβολή βίντεο, παρουσίαση κειμένου και μια επιτελεστική πράξη πολιτισμικής συντήρησης. Το κείμενο αναπτύχθηκε σε συνεργασία με τη μυθιστοριογράφο Natasha Soobramanien και ερμηνεύεται από την Krystel Khoury.

Η Mary Jirmanus Saba (γεν. 1983, Λίβανος/ΗΠΑ) είναι γεωγράφος και κινηματογραφίστρια. Αυτήν τη στιγμή βρίσκεται στο Instagram ως @nomaternityleave, όπου καταγράφει την εξελισσόμενη συνεργατική της πρακτική με τη Nada Ziane (γεν. 2019) και τη Seri Kamil (γεν. 2021).

‘Double Dummy Defense’
Φιλμ στα αγγλικά, 20 λεπτά

Η Jenifer και o Taha μετακόμισαν πρόσφατα σε ένα χωριό στην επαρχία της νότιας Γαλλίας. Εκεί μαθαίνουν πώς να διευθύνουν το παντοπωλείο του χωριού και πώς να παίζουν μπριτζ με το τοπικό μπριτζ κλαμπ. Και οι δύο αυτές δραστηριότητες ήταν χρήσιμες για την Jenifer και τον Taha στις προσπάθειές τους να αφομοιωθούν, να ασχοληθούν με την κοινότητα και να μάθουν γαλλικά. Στο έργο παρουσιάζουν μια περφόρμανς που γυρίστηκε με Super-8 στην οποία μοιράζονται μερικές από τις δεξιότητες που έχουν αποκτήσει.

Η Nile Sunset Annex (π. 2013, Αίγυπτος) είναι μια εξελισσόμενη ομάδα παραγωγής και διάδοσης της σύγχρονης τέχνης, η οποία ξεκίνησε σαν ένας μικρός αυτοχρηματοδοτούμενος χώρος τέχνης που φιλοξενεί εκθέσεις καλλιτεχνών σε ένα διαμέρισμα στο Κάιρο. Έκτοτε, έχει λειτουργήσει ως εκδότης, ως συλλέκτης έργων τέχνης, ως αρχειονόμος, ως συντάκτης, ως τεχνικός, ως καλλιτέχνης, ως συγγραφέας, ως μπαργούμαν ή επιμελητής, όταν είναι απαραίτητο, ενώ επίσης έχει κάνει ένα αρκετά μεγάλο διάλειμμα.

Noor Abed
‘Mother: A Choreography of Readings’
Σκηνοθετημένες αναγνώσεις στα αγγλικά, 60 λεπτά

Η Noor Abed δημιουργεί μια σκηνοθετημένη ανάγνωση τεσσάρων μονολόγων και διαλόγων γραμμένων από διαφορετικούς συγγραφείς, καλλιτέχνες και κινηματογραφιστές με το θέμα της μητρότητας να τα διατρέχει με αόριστο τρόπο. Σε αυτή τη ζωντανή παρουσίαση των κειμένων, η Noor προσφέρει τις δικές της ερμηνείες χρησιμοποιώντας ήχο και κίνηση για τις οποίες συνεργάζεται με πέντε περφόρμερς: τη Μαρίνα Μηλιού Θεοχαράκη, τον Nathaniel Moore, τη Μάρθα Πασακοπούλου, τη Parvin Saljoughi και την Ελίζα Σόρογκα. Τα κείμενα που παρουσιάζονται είναι τα εξής: «Fig Tree» της καλλιτέχνιδας Dina Mimi (γενν. 1994, Παλαιστίνη), «Lose Weight Now» του κινηματογραφιστή Mohammad Shawky Hassan (γεν. 1981, Αίγυπτος), «Rewind (or Rematch?)» του Karim Kattan (γ. 1989, Παλαιστίνη) και «Food» της Noor Alsamarrai (γεν. 1992, Ιράκ/ΗΠΑ).

Η Noor Abed (γεν. 1988, Παλαιστίνη) είναι εικαστικός που ασχολείται με διαφορετικά μέσα και σκηνοθέτρια ταινιών. Η πρακτική της ερευνά έννοιες της χορογραφίας και τις φαντασιακές σχέσεις των ατόμων, δημιουργώντας καταστάσεις όπου οι κοινωνικές δυνατότητες δοκιμάζονται αλλά και επιτελούνται. Το 2020 ίδρυσε μαζί με τη Lara Khaldi, το “School of Intrusions”, μια ανεξάρτητη εκπαιδευτική πλατφόρμα στη Ραμάλα της Παλαιστίνης. Αυτήν την περίοδο η Noor είναι φιλοξενούμενη καλλιτέχνις στο Rijksakademie στο Άμστερνταμ 2022-24.

Makimakkuk
Μουσική περφόρμανς, 60 λεπτά

Η Makimakkuk θα κλείσει τη βραδιά με μουσικές επιλογές από δικές της παραγωγές καθώς και από άφρο μουσική, όπως το Amapiano, τα οποία πρόκειται να υφάνει δημιουργώντας ένα υβριδικό σύνολο πολλαπλών ειδών.

Ο Makimakkkuk (γεν. 1988, Παλαιστίνη) είναι μουσικός, στιχουργός και selector μουσικής με έδρα τη Ραμάλα της Παλαιστίνης.

The event features performances, talks, writings, videos and music by Dina Mimi, Karim Kattan, Makimakkuk, Mary Jirmanus Saba, Mohammad Shawky Hassan, Natasha Soobramanien, Nile Sunset Annex, Noor Abed, Noor Alsamarrai and it is realized with the support of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and in cooperation with Allianz Kulturstiftung. Some of the projects where originally produced as part of the Read the Room Festival presented at Kaaitheater in March 2022 in Brussels.

‘A Labor Theory of Artistic Value: On Motherhood and Artistic Genius’

Exploring the intersections between gendered reproductive labor that keeps the cultural space in motion, and the reproductive labor of motherhood, this collaborative performance combines video projection, a delivered text, and a performative act of cultural maintenance. Text developed in collaboration with novelist Natasha Soobramanien and performed by Krystel Khoury.

Mary Jirmanus Saba (b. 1983, Lebanon/USA) is a geographer and filmmaker. She is currently on Instagram, @nomaternityleave, where she documents her developing collaborative practice with Nada Ziane (b. 2019) and Seri Kamil (b. 2021).

‘Double Dummy Defense’
Film in English, 20 minutes

Jenifer and Taha recently moved to a countryside village in the south of France. They are learning how to run the village grocery shop and how to play bridge with the local bridge club. Both activities have been useful to Jenifer and Taha in their attempts to assimilate, engage with the community, and learn French. They are presenting a performance filmed in Super-8 in which they share some of the skills they have learned.

Nile Sunset Annex (f. 2013, Egypt) is an evolving production and dispersion outfit for contemporary art, that was founded as a small self-funded art space that puts on exhibitions of artists’ work in a flat in Cairo. Since then, it has acted as a publisher, an art collection, an archivist, an editor, a technician, an artist, an author, a barmaid, or a curator, when necessary, as well taking a fairly long break.

‘Mother: A Choreography of Readings’
Staged readings in English, 60 minutes

Noor Abed creates a staged reading of four monologues and dialogues written by different writers, artists, and filmmakers with the theme “mother” vaguely running through them. In this live staging of the texts, Noor offers her own interpretations using sound and movement for which she collaborates with five performers: Marina Miliou Theocharaki, Nathaniel Moore, Martha Pasakopoulou, Parvin Saljoughi and Eliza Soroga.  The texts presented are “Fig Tree” by visual artist Dina Mimi (b. 1994, Palestine), “Lose Weight Now” by filmmaker Mohammad Shawky Hassan (b. 1981, Egypt), “Rewind (or Rematch?)” by Karim Kattan (b. 1989, Palestine), and “Food” by Noor Alsamarrai (b. 1992, Iraq/USA).

Noor Abed (b. 1988, Palestine) is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker. Her practice examines notions of choreography and the imaginary relationship of individuals, creating situations where social possibilities are both rehearsed and performed. In 2020 she co-founded, with Lara Khaldi, the “School of Intrusions,” an independent educational platform in Ramallah, Palestine. Noor is currently a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam 2022-24.

Makimakkuk will carry through the night a music selection of some of her own productions as well as afro music, the likes of Amapiano, woven into a hybrid set of multi genre.

Makimakkkuk (b. 1988, Palestine) is a music artist, lyricist, and selector based in Ramallah, Palestine.
